Center for American Archeology Research Field School

Dates: June 2-June 27, 2003

Where: Center for American Archeology in Kampsville, Illinois

Project: Excavation will take place at the Middle Woodland Mound House site, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This site has been excavated by the Center for American Archeology since 1990. Mound House was an important Hopewell ceremonial and social gathering site and contains two large mounds and debris and features extending across a several acre area. Materials recovered include numerous items reflecting involvement of the site in the Hopewell Interaction Sphere. This field school will conduct test excavations on the north and northeast portions of the site where we have not previously excavated. Surface debris suggests activities in this area were at least as intense as in the western portion where recent excavations have been concentrated. Our primary purpose this season is to document the extent and nature of activities on this portion of the site, and to determine to what extent they were related to the ceremonies being conducted on and around the mounds.

Faculty/Staff: The excavation/courses will be directed by Douglas Charles, Director of Research for the Center for American Archeology and Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. CAA staff will serve as field/lab supervisors.

Curriculum: Students will learn basic excavation techniques and data collection procedures, and they will be introduced to the fundamentals of laboratory processing and curation, including artifact identification. Emphasis will also be placed on learning the prehistory of the region.

Cost: $1500 (Includes CAA program tuition and room & board.)

Important note: The Monticello Foundation/Center for American Archeology Women in Archeology Program will offer a minimum of six scholarships for qualified undergraduate women. Scholarships cover CAA program tuition ($1100); recipients pay their room and board ($400), transportation to and from Kampsville, and Lewis and Clark Community College tuition (if applicable). Please indicate if you would like to be considered for a scholarship when you apply.
