This year marked a record number of applications for the CAA’s Women in Archeology Program. This program, made possible through a generous grant from the Monticello College Foundation, allows us to offer two outstanding opportunities for young women pursuing careers in archeology: the Women in Archeology Internship and the Women in Archeology Scholarship. Although there has been an increase in the number of women starting careers in archeology, a recent examination of the distribution of women and men receiving funds from the National Science Foundation (NSF), posted by Doug’s Archaeology Blog, shows that female archeologists are applying for grants less often than men. Females apply less frequently because there are simply fewer females in tenure-track positions within archeology. Although females in archeology have made great advances, there is still a need to support young women as they begin their careers in archeology.

The Women in Archeology Internship and Scholarship Programs help young women advance in the field. Our Internship Program provides early career women a chance to get supervisory experience in the field and develop their professional network. The Women in Archeology Scholarship Program provides financial support for young women to help cover the expenses of field school tuition. Such opportunities build confidence  in our young women, giving them the skills they need as they move forward in archeology.

Help women in archeology. Encourage them as they begin their studies, enroll in field schools, and apply for jobs in the field. Support young women as they advance their careers, research options in secondary education, and challenge themselves within the field. The archeological community can only narrow this gap between the sexes by supporting and encouraging young women. All of us at the CAA are proud to be part of that network of support for young women in archeology. Scholarship support is still available for young women to attend the CAA High School and Adult Field Schools. Encourage the young women you know to take advantage of this opportunity today!
