GUEST SPEAKERS

MR. YATES

We had a visitor named Mr.Yates. He came to East Side School. He was a principal there. He came to East Side to teach a bunch of kids about Indian artifacts. He has been collecting artifacts for 30 years. He taught Mrs.Segraves 3rd grade and Mrs.Simmons 4th grade. He talked about different kinds of tools like drills, stone axes, and spears. An atl atl was used to throw a spear. It was about a half foot long. The atl atl was probably made of wood bent into the shape of a "U". Tools were made by grinding, sharpening, and scraping. A metate and a mano were used for grinding corn. A metate was a large flat stone used with a mano. The stone would have a dish shape in it where corn or seeds were ground. The mano was the hand held stone used to do the grinding. Mr.Yates taught us a lot about the Indians and their way of life.
